上：三重県の古い火葬場。2002/12/20撮影。左側は葬儀の際に使われるのであろう集会所で、右側に見える煉瓦造りのものが火葬炉。周辺の多くの墓地が、墓地ごとに集会場と火葬炉を持っており、集落ごとに総出で葬儀を執り行っていた時代の民俗を感じさせる。近隣の火葬場には、ガスバーナーなどを装備するようリニューアルされており現役と思われるものもあった。
下：新鋭の火葬場（東京臨海斎場）。2004/01/09撮影。撮影のすぐ後に使用が開始された。東京湾臨海部の埋立地に作られた港区・ja:品川区・ja:目黒区・ja:大田区・ja:世田谷区が作る行政組合運営の火葬場で、火葬設備のほか告別式などを行う斎場スペースも持つ総合斎場である。
