Peder Schumacher (1635-1699) was an energetic servant to the Danish Crown and at the time of the painting aged circa 34. At that time he was Kancelliråd (Member of the King's council) but would soon acquire more titles and in 1671 he was accepted into the nobility as count Griffenfeld.
