The spaces indicating settlements are in many cases too small toadmit a complete description of the inhabitants, and accordingly theyhave been marked by races rather than by nationalities and tribes.German is made to do duty for all inhabitants of Germany whetherLow or High, as well as for Austrians, German Swiss, and Russo-Ger-man Mennonites. The last are reported simply as Mennonites, butare, I believe, in all cases of German origin. Skandinavian is usedinstead of Swede, Norwegian and Dane, because in some cases thedistinction was not made in the reports, and in order to limit thenumber of colors on the map which is to come. The Waconda or Great Spirit Spring, which is situated in Mitch-ell County, Kansas, about two miles east of Cawker City, has beendescribed in detail by G. E. Patrick in vol. vii, p. 22, Trans-actions of the Kansas Academy of Science. An analysis of the water,and of the rock forming the mound on which the spring is located, isalso given. The spring is upon a conical, limestone mound 42 feet in height, and150 feet in diameter at the top. The pool itself is a nearly circularlake about 50 feet in diamter, 35 feet deep, and the water rises towithin a few inches of the top of the basin. There is a level space onall sides of the spring so wide that a carriage can be readily drivenaround it. There is but little indication of organic matter in the water of thelarge spring, though there is a slimy white deposit adhering to the bot-tom and sides, but the water is colorless, clear, and tran
