Summary

[edit]
Description

English: Scarped ridge of a huge travertine deposition. It almost totally fills the valley of old river Lauchert, Swabian Alb. Although the Alb is karstified, the river’s water does not all go underground. At the juvenile end of the travertine deposition the water falls by ca. 8 m and Primary Caves tend to develop, finally forming a cavity, closed on all sides. The process may well take several thousand years.
The waterfall’s water quantity varies considerably for two reasons: 1. Seasonal precipitation, 2. A drainage channel redirects the water into an old water power station. High floods wash the lower river bed deep.
