KENT-8E479A: Medieval prick spur
Description
English: An incomplete Medieval cast copper-alloy prick spur (c. 1250-c. 1350).The goad, neck and part of each of the sides have survived. The sides are sub-oval in cross-section and the neck is lozenge shaped in cross-section. The goad is a square-based pyramid shape. The spur is 26.3mm long, 11mm wide, 2.3mm thick and weighs 19.5 grams.
A similar spur has been published: Ellis 1995: 133, fig. 90, ref: 321, in Clarke (eds.) and dated 1250-1350.

There are similar prick spurs illustrated in Prick Spurs 700-1700 (Ellis 2002. Finds Research Group).

Other examples can be seen in the London Museum Medieval Catalogue Ward Perkins 1940), pages 94-112. Here the style of goad is classified as type point 8.
