There was an old bridge andthey sat down upon it and played.After a while they began to lift up thelogs to see which could lift one thehighest. B\ and by, as they were lift-ing the logs, the bridge broke and wentdown into the creek. The sun was thenjust going down, so they went on to-wards the field of melons. They soon came to the fence andcrawled under it and began thumpingthe melons to see if they were ripe.There was a turkey in the melon patch,and it got frightened and began to flyup into the trees and gobble, whichmade the boys feel a little afraid thatthey might be seen. The man had said that he wouldplace guns around in his melon patch,and tie strings to the triggers, so thatwhen boys came to steal melons theywould run up against the strings andthe guns would go off and shoot theboys, or frighten them so that theywould run away.
