Summary

[edit]
Description

Enhanced image of lightning on Jupiter, taken from JunoCam during mission phase, Perijove 3.

Jovian lightning occurs in cumulonimbus clouds (Cb), which contains water and ice, and reveal themselves as bright clumpy clouds about 1000 km in size. Unlike on Earth, which are driven by Solar energy, Jovian Cb clouds are driven by vigorous convection from the very hot interior (the gaseous equivalent of Earth's volcanism). Jovian thunderstorms are most common in the northern polar regions, on Earth they are most common in the tropics (especially over the land).
