Summary[edit]

Description A Junkers Ju 86Z-2 in Australia, in 1937.
This aircraft was built in 1937 by Junkers at Dessau, Germany, and was promoted "Ju 86B-Australien" (W.Nr.086 0952, civil registration D-AGEY) by the company. It was flown to Australia in March 1937 by Hans Kommoll. On arrival in Australia it was registered VH-UYA and named "Lawrence Hargrave". The aircraft was flown to Australia as part of barter agreement with a Sydney wool broker, H. Beinssen. The trade was for £ 23,000 worth of wool being shipped to Germany while Mr Beinssen got the aircraft for sale in Australia. Althought the aircraft was fast, its Jumo 205 Diesel engines were unreliable. As no orders followed, it was dismantled in Melbourne and shipped back to Germany on 25 August 1937 (as D-AREY). It became the personal aircraft of Junkers director Koppenberg (D-ARJF “Herbert Norkus" then DD+VL).
