Description
Deutsch: Stolpersteine für Julius Haas und Berta Haas geb. Greilsheimer vor dem Haus Schillerstraße 42, Freiburg
English: "Stumbling blocks" for Julius Haas and Berta Haas, née Greilsheimer, in front of the house at Schillerstrasse 42 in Freiburg. These memorials were placed here in July 2003.

Berta Haas (also spelled Bertha Haas) was born on January 24, 1883, in Friesenheim as Berta Greilsheimer. In her first marriage she was the wife of a schoolmaster named Jost, and her second marriage was to Julius Haas. She was the aunt of a woman named Ilse Wyler. In the years 1939 and 1940 she lived on the 4th floor at Jacobistrasse 54 in Freiburg. After that, presumably because of her new marriage in 1940, she lived together with Julius Haas at Schillerstrasse 42. On October 22, 1940, she was deported to the Gurs internment camp in France. From there she was transferred via the Drancy internment camp with convoy no. 62 to Auschwitz, where she was murdered at the age of 60. Along with her, 1,200 Jews were deported there, of whom only 42 men and 2 women survived at the time of liberation.

Julius Haas was born on March 22, 1874, in Emmendingen. He worked in Freiburg as regional director of the Iduna Insurance Company. As of 1934, however, he was forced to give up this position under pressure from the Nazis. / In 1933, his place of residence was Wilhelmstrasse 15 in Freiburg, and from 1934 to 1940 he lived on the third floor at Schillerstrasse 42. Apparently he married the widow Berta Jost, née Greilsheimer, in 1940, because starting then Schillerstrasse 42 was recorded as the residence of Berta Haas. Following the Kristallnacht of November 9-10, 1938, Julius Haas was arrested on November 11, 1938. He was then deported from a Freiburg prison to the Dachau concentration camp, where he had to hand over the cash that he had on his person, amounting to 10 Reichsmarks and 10 Pfennigs. He received the prisoner number 20938. On October 22, 1940, he was once again deported from Freiburg, this time to the Gurs internment camp. He died at the age of 68 on February 14 (or 16), 1942, in the camp at Rivesaltes, which was a subcamp of Gurs.
