He has written: The Story of aCountry Town (1883). which attracted con-siderable attention: The Mystery of the Locks(1883); <A Moonlight Boy» (1887); <A ManStory (1888); An Ante-Mortem Statement;The Confession of John Whitlock ; etc. Howe, Elias, American inventor: b. Spen-cer, Mass., 9 July 1819: d. Brooklyn, N. Y., 3Oct. 1867. He lived with his father, who wasboth farmer and miller, till 1836, working uponthe farm and in the mill and attending the dis-trict school during the winters. He then learnedthe trade of a machinist, and experimented ininventing a sewing-machine.
