standard Switch Details. Through cities and towns a plain trolley construc-tion is used; the cars are therefore equipped both withthe trolley and the third-rail shoe. In changing fromthe former to the latter and vice-versa, the trolley israised and lowered in the ordinary manner. An in-genious device, controlled b) interlocking automaticrelays, cuts out electrical connection to the shoe whenthe trolley is in use. This is described elsewhere, to-gether with the car control system. Standard forms are used for switches and cross-overs, passing tracks, etc.; this is important, as theposition of the various arrangements for the third-railmust be accurate. An ingenious but very simple device is used onswitches to electrically disconnect the third rail whenthe switch is not in use.
