Photographer Mora Dies From Starvation. New York City, New York; October 20, 1926 (Associated Press) Maria Jos Mora a widely known photographer of a generation ago Is dead Mon who was found nearly starved in his small room several months ago died at Saint Vincent's hospital. He was 80 years old. Petition for the appointment of a guardian for him were pending in the courts. The old photographer led the life of a recluse during the last years of his life. Four pigeons he kept in his room were his only companion. Although he had a bank deposit of $10,000 he allowed himself only 15 cents a day for food. He was said to have refused to bathe having been convinced some years ago on a trip to his native Italy [sic] that bathing washed away the spark of life.

He was born in Havana, Cuba and not in Italy. $10,000 in 1926 is about $165,000 in 2022.
