John is a businessman who came to Awerial from Bor town where he owned a bookshop, a market stall selling women's shoes and a herd of cattle. During the dry season in South Sudan (usually in February), cattle owners move their stock out to the wetter, greener parts of land close to the river Nile. With the onset of fighting in December, many moved their cattle early to keep them safe from raiding. With the help of his brother, John attempted to move his cattle , but they were ambushed and shot at from a machine gun mounted in a mango tree. Fearing for the safety of his family, John then left with his extended family and is now safely on the other side of the river in Awerial. A businessman by heart, John managed to gather a small stock of smoked fish and bring it with him from the other side of the river (pictured). Prices range from between 5 to 15 SSP ($1.50 to $4.50). With the money he scrapes together, he hopes to reach Nimule in the south in order to cross into Uganda, a place seen by him and many as a safe haven.
