Det är af intresseatt se på hans egna tomma »allvarhga-^ bilder, t. ex. de så säll-synt ihäUga och teatraliska ur Apostlarnas lif. Af stark humor,ehuru på ett annat sätt än han själf tror, är hans försök attgyckla med Rembrandts etsningskonst (bild j6). Paul before Felix,designd & etchd in the rediculous manner of Rembrandt byW:am Hogarth 1751, visar, pä det lustigaste sätt, hur den snus-förnuftige konstnären vid 1700-talets midt missuppfattade heladen djupare skönhetens väsen. Denna etsning är lika ful somHogarths egna »allvarliga» framställning af detta samma ämne,och det vill ej säga litet. / 78. John Wilkes, Esq. Politisk hånbild af Hogarth. 1763. SKÄMTBILDER UNDER i 70O-TALET. Det ihåliga patos, den torrhet och okonstnärlighet, som ut-märka honom, då han söker skönhet, lämnar honom, då hansöker sanning. Sin största betydelse får hans verk genom attvara en afspegling af London 1730—1760. Färgrik och drama-tisk är bilden men säkert ensidig. Punch skildrar London underThe Victorian aera så, att åskådaren tror, att en knif stoppadi munnen eller en gosse ätande åtta bitar korintkaka till sitt teäro de enda brott inom tänkbarhetens gränser. Allt är så väl-kammadt, så städadt och oförargligt, att man tänker på en sön-dagsskola mera än på världens största stad, där Oscar Wildeoch Jack the Ripper väl ej böra så helt förgätas i totalbilden.Hogarth tecknar sin tids London lika ensidigt. De trånga gator,som den lärde d:r Samuel Johnson älskade, och där han till gat-pojkarnas glädje vickande på hufvudet på det löjligaste sättvan
