McLaren,1 the Presidentof the Board, said to me that he hoped I would take serviceat once with him—that he could not get my commission forsome time, but that I could be made a contract surgeon with-out delay. I agreed to this, was introduced to Surgeon-General Finley,2 got my contract, and was told that I wasespecially detailed to go to the Union Hotel Hospital in George-town, which was under the direction of Surgeon McLaren. I began service, and had three things with me that none ofthe other surgeons had: A set of clinical thermometers likethose Dr. Keen talked about, a straight one and one with acurve; a hypodermic syringe, and a Symes staff for urethralstricturotomy. The hypodermic syringe was in constantrequisition. The clinical thermometer was troublesome andwas not used very much. Consequently whenever any surgeon oftroops about Washington applied for the discharge of one ofhis men for the reason that he had an impermeable strictureof the urethra, instead of granting the discharge, Dr. Triplersent that case to me. There was quite a number of them, butI have no statistics of my cases. One day in the Spring of 1862 I was in the hospital officewhen two men walked in—one a large man with an air of im-portance, the other a small man who had said very little. Thelarge man said they would like to see some of the cases in thehospital. They did not give their names, but I thought it wasproper to show the cases, and so took them around.
