In 1880 he was established in Seattle and opened Judkins' Floating Sunbeam Gallery (also known as the Cottage Gallery), , a studio on a barge. He married Ida A. Bangs, and had three children, John R. Judkins (1882-1903), Edith Judkins (1883-1900) & Etta Hazle Judkins (1891-1974). The family moved between Washington State, British Columbia, and Alaska, opening various galleries and studios.
