"I've been hitchiking since 1977! I've got stories, man, lots of stories. How many people you know have gotten rides on airplanes hitchiking? I have, twice! Yeah, man. I'm like a social scientist, a walking anthropologist. There's a lot of peace in walking the country. I've met wonderful people, man. There's just... love. Love. Americans are good people, the vast majority. Good people. I've walked from one end to the other through every city in the US. I know every exit. People tell me I should write a book of all my experiences. I've got stories! Lots of stories......." To my shame and regret, I had to say no to Joel's invitation to head to the Buckhorn and drink a couple beers. I met him at 7:45 this morning. By 8:30, everyone else I work with had driven up, parked, and looked sideways at us standing in the alley as they hurried into work. I itched to just say, screw it; I'm gonna go buy this man a beer and listen to stories all morning. How did I get so responsible? Who'd I sell my freedom to? If I see him next week, f%@& it; I'm marching right on down the street to the Buckhorn and spend the day with one of the freest souls I've ever met. But he won't be here. He'll be sharing a ride with a kindly trucker hauling a load of onions, or a good Mormon in a '92 Yukon or a titan of industry with a tricked out Saratoga twin prop somewhere else, down the road.
