Description
Nederlands: Joan Blaeu (1596-1673) zette de cartografische uitgeverij voort van zijn vader Willem Blaeu (1573-1638). Zijn ‘Grooten Atlas oft Wereldbeschrijving’ in negen delen (Amsterdam 1664-1665), gold als de best uitgevoerde atlas van die tijd. Kostbaar gebonden en ingekleurde exemplaren dienden als geschenk voor vorstelijke personen en waren destijds een gewild object voor verzamelaars. Een andere beroemde uitgave was zijn Nederlandse stedenatlas uit 1652. Blaeu’s linkerhand rust op een tellurium, een instrument waarmee men de bewegingen van de aarde aanschouwelijk kon maken. In 1672, een jaar voor de dood van Joan Blaeu, ging de drukkerij met negen drukpersen, ‘De negen muzen’ geheten, door brand verloren.
