Jens Munk's Winter Harbour at the mouth of Churchill River (1619-1620)

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Bird's eye view map of the mouth of Churchill River on Hudson Bay, from Danish explorer Jens Munk's voyage account (Navigatio Septentrionalis, 1624). During his 1619-1620 Northwest Passage expedition, he was forced to establish there a winter camp, that he named Munkenes Winterhaven ("Munk's Winter Harbour"), near the site of present-day town of Churchill, Manitoba. Various scenes are shown, such as hunting and tree cutting. During winter and spring, Munk lost almost all of his 64 men to scurvy (a burial scene is shown near the center). He managed to sail back home to Denmark on one of the two ships, with the only two other surviving men of the crew.
