Cambridge, Mass. June 9th 1843
My dear Sir, [Colonel Trumbull]
Certain inquisitive ladies of this town have pressed me to write to you on a subject in which they profess to take a lively interest. You remember the house here, in which were Gen. Washington’s head quarters when you were one of his Aids in 1775. These ladies are amazingly curious to know what particular rooms were occupied by Gen. Washington. It is in vain that I have told them that you cannot be expected to have [charged?] your mind with such trifling details for so long a time. They have prevailed on me to make the inquiry. On the next leaf I have drawn a plan of the house & numbered the rooms. If you can inform me by the numbers, which was the parlour, which the office, which the chamber occupied by the General, & the like, you will set the hearts of these ladies at rest, and confer a favor on
yours most respectfully & truly,
Jared Sparks
Colonel Trumbull.
