Ett giftigthat, en lust att såra och smutsa kan bli följden. Liksom kär-leken kan hitta ord, som nästan förvåna framsägaren genomsin kraft och sin fyllighet, så kunna ur hatet uppstå bilder ochord af en öfvernaturlig giftighet. Så har varit fallet med denstore konstnären och olyckliga människan Toulouse Lautrec. Henri de Toulouse Lautrec föddes 1864 i Albi i södraFrankrike. Familjen, en gammal fransk grefvesläkt, hade in-tresse för konst. Fadern, en ifrig sportsman, modellerade djur,och det påstås, att ett porträtt, som Forain målat af den unge 430

Redan som späd nåddes han afolyckan. Hans bägge ben krossades, och han blef en krymp-ling för lifvet. Man kan tänka sig hvad detta skulle få för in-verkan pä den lifstörstande, intelligente gossen, sä mycket mersom han i följd af sitt löjliga utseende blef förhånad och ut-skrattad af sin egen mor. Den bitterhet och det hat, som här-af väcktes, återspeglas i hans subtila, för mången oförståeligakonst. Han lärde sig rita för Cabanel och Bonnat, men detvar från Degas och Forain han fick sina viktigaste intryck. På Montmartrelifvet, i hvilket den förnäme krymplingen-konstnären lidelsefullt deltog, såg han pä ett nytt, personligtsätt. I färgraffinemang och indelning påminner hans teckningmycket om de japanska träsnitten, och Lautrec är en af de få,som i Europa fattat
