The Shields Daily News for 19 April 1907 reports:
"THEFT OF A LAMP AT NORTH SHIELDS.
At North Shields Police Court today, John Elliott (27), South Shields, was charged with having stolen a copper lamp valued at £1 15s, the property of the Tyne Improvement Commissioners, on the 20th ult.
William R. Alexander, a plumber employed by the Commissioners at the Albert Edward Dock, said he missed the lamp on the date in question. Andrew Hunter said he saw the accused and another man take the lamp into an NER waggon, break it up, put the pieces into their pockets and leave, going in the direction of North Shields. Inspector Leitch of the RTP [River Tyne Police], said he arrested the accused yesterday and charged him with the theft and he made no reply. Formally charged the accused emphatically denied the offence. The magistrates said that as this was the prisoner's first appearance for larceny they would give him a chance and only fine him 10s and costs".
