Arrested for: False Pretences
Arrested at: North Shields Police Station
Arrested on: 12 October 1904
Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-57-James E Brown
The Shields Daily News for 12 October 1904 reports:
"James Brown (21), 36 Hadrian Road, Wallsend, was charged with having obtained by means of false pretences the sum of 1s 6d, the moneys of Robert English. The wife of the prosecutor, who resides at 16 Burdon Street, Percy Main, said that on the 8th ult. the prisoner came to her house and from certain representations he made to her she lent him 1s 6d for an hour.
Robert English, a railway guard, said he was branch secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants and he had never seen the prisoner before that morning. He was not a member of the society and there was no money due to him.
PC Brown said he arrested the prisoner and charged him with the fraud. He replied "I cannot remember getting that money. I must have been drunk. I do not, however, deny having got it". Accused told the magistrates he had gone to the wrong house. This was his 5th appearance and he was fined 10s and costs".
These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1).
