While entering the Golden Gate in 1857,she struck Four Fathom Bar off Point Bonita, but managedto reach her wharf with twelve feet of water in her hold. Finally,in 1878, she was caught in a storm off Montevideo while on avoyage from San Francisco to Boston. Badly damaged, she putinto port, and was condemned and sold. The Red Jacket was one of the most famous of the Austra-lian packets of the White Star Line. She was built in 1853 by

40 SOME SHIPS OF THE CLIPPER SHIP ERA George Thomas at Rockland, Me., for Secomb & Taylor of Bos-ton, and was designed by Samuel H. Pook. She ran to Liverpoolin January, 1854, from Sandy Hook to Rock Light in 13 days and1 hour; actual time to Liverpool, 14 days and 8 hours. On herarrival she was bought by Pilkington & Watson, agents of theWhite Star Line, for $150,000, and went into the Australiantrade. She sailed from Liverpool to Melbourne, Australia, onher first voyage in 69 days, 11 hours. During her voyage of13,880 miles she averaged 200 miles a day. She rivalled theLightning as the fastest ship in the English marine, andended her days in the lumber trade between Canada andEngland. The James Baines was one of four clipper ships built in 1854by Donald McKay for James Baines & Co. of Liverpool, who ranthe Black Ball Line of packets to Australia. Her figure-head wasa bust of her owner, James Baines, and on her stern was a globesupported by the arms of England and America
