Description |
English: Portrait of James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton and 2nd Duke of Brandon [1703-1743]. Subject is shown half-length with one hand tucked into his reddish-brown coat, with a white cravat, lace cuff, and wearing the ribbon and star of the Order of the Thistle. The portrait is in an elaborate gilt frame with moulded decoration. At the bottom and centre of the frame is a plaque which reads /5TH DUKE OF HAMILTON/ BY WILLIAM HOARE/. From [Peerage]: "James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton was born on 5 January 1702/3. He was the son of Lt.-Gen. James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Hamilton and Elizabeth Gerard. He married, firstly, Lady Anne Cochrane, daughter of John Campbell Cochrane, 4th Earl of Dundonald and Lady Anne Murray, on 14 February 1722/23. He married, secondly, Elizabeth Strangways, daughter of Thomas Strangways, in 1727. He married, thirdly, Anne Spencer, daughter of Edward Spencer and Anne (?), on 21 August 1737, (although Scots Peerage states 23 July). He died on 2 March 1742/43 at age 40 at Bath, Somerset, England, from jaundice and palsy (note that Scots Peerage says 9 March). His will (dated 1 Feb 1742) was probated on 22 June 1743...He gained the rank of Captain General in 1724 in the service of the Royal Company of Archers. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) on 31 October 1726. He held the office of a Lord of the Bedchamber between June 1727 and 1733. He was invested as a Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 8 April 1736 |
