Summary[edit]

Description

Patitapavana pataka, Nila Chakra with 8 Navagunjaras, kalasam and amalaka that sits atop a temple's main tower (Shikhara)...

The red flag fluttering atop the Jagannath Temple signifies that Sri Jagannath is within the building. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagannath_Temple,_Puri#Nila_Chakra That time, it seems to me, the Lord was absent?? Every day, at sunset, a different flag is tied to a mast attached to the Nila Chakra. Every Ekadasi, a lamp is lit on top of the temple near the wheel.

The Nila Chakra disc atop the Jagannath Temple has eight Navagunjaras carved on the outer circumference, with all facing towards the flagpost above.

Another architectonic element visible in the picutre is amalaka: a stone disk, usually with ridges on the rim, that sits atop a temple's main tower (Shikhara). According to one interpretation, the amalaka represents a lotus, and thus the symbolic seat for the deity below. Another interpretation is that it symbolizes the sun, and is thus the gateway to the heavenly world. According other sources, the shape of the amalaka has been inspired by the fruit of the myrobolan fig tree Phyllanthus emblica (ou Mirobalanus embilica). The amalaka itself is crowned with a kalasam (finial), from which a temple banner is often hung. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amalaka

The temple was built in the 12th century atop its ruins by the progenitor of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva.
