English: Kabuki actor Iwai Shijaku (Iwai Hanshirō VII, 1804–1845) as the strong woman Arajishi Danriki. The character (pushing up sleeves for a fight) wears a kosode in a kōshi ('lattice', tartan/plaid) pattern (specifically a misuji-koushi 'three-striped lattice' style) that features both ikat thread dyeing (the blue-mottled white) and dark green highlights (over-dyeing, embroidery, or patchwork) where the grey stripes cross; an obi in black, grey, and pink, with gold embroidery; and a long, sheathed sword. |
