In papal Rome no handwas stirred to repair the universal decay with hammer or mortar. But in every corner of the city, in every courtyard, on every piazza, the fountainsplashed with so sweet a lullaby, the three hundred and sixty-five churches offered sowelcome a refuge where weary souls might sleep and dream, that in this atmosphere ofsecular slumber men were scarcely aware of the decay around them, and wandered likesomnambulists amidst the ruins, leading an existence scarcely more animated than that ofthe ivy which covered them. Then came a fresh breath of autumn, and one morning the cannons thundered at thegates of the city.
