Text Appearing Before Image:
dy region begins, and rises to aheight of five thousand four hundred feet. But on this side only a few trees haveescaped the destroying axe or flame, and these lonely outposts stand defiantly, buffetedby wind and weather, amidst the lava. The latter grows harder and more solid, and issplit here and there into gullies filled with sharp pointed stones. Only in a few shelteredcorners do you find a handful of soil where the wild myrtle and yellow broom grow,or coarse hard grass spreads a scanty oasis. When you look to the south andsouth-west into the amphitheatre of mountains, you perceive with astonishment how thefollowers of the great monarch press around his throne with crater after crater. Everyone of these has served at one time or another to form the land below, pushing it far outinto the waves, and narrowing the straits. The king thundered up aloft, and his servantscarried their flaming torches down into the plain. From this spot as many as fifty sub-sidiary craters can be counted.
Text Appearing After Image:
TO ETNA. 467 At about eight thousand five hundred feet above the sea vegetation finally ceases, and the region of snow begins ; which, however, is nearly all melted in summer, or limitedto the shadiest hollows. Here, at an altitude of eight thousand nine hundred feet, standsthe Torre del Filosofo ; and at about nine thousand two hundred feet, the Casa Inglese, the highest building on the island. Sideways, to the east, the huge, terrific hollow calledthe Val di Bove sinks down suddenly. It is at least a mile in diameter, and is awful inits solitude and desolation; the eye plunges awe-stricken into its depths, and when thewind howls in it you might imagine yourself to hear the yells and cries of dying Titans.
