bellinesca over the mantegnesca was doubtless greatlydue to the use made by the Bellini of the new method ofpainting in oils which was, perhaps, introduced from Flandersinto Venice by Antonello da Messina about 1473 ; for thisnew method was very favourable to the display of magnificencein the treatment of great festal and historical scenes, such asGentile Bellini and Cafpaccio loved to paint, and to the delicatetints and details, the luminous and profound colours and thestriking contrasts by which portraits and religious picturesgained a fresh and irresistible charm—such as still so stronglyattracts us in the Madonnas of Giovanni Bellini and in theworks of his early successor, Cima da Conegliano. The eras of these early painters are more easily remember-able when we connect them with certain historical events andpersonages.
