l this murderous hurly-burly took place (1333-1334) a very dramatic intermezzo—one in which was reflecteda totally different side of human nature. The misery thathad been brought on Italy by constant war and devastationreproduced at this period several phenomena like that of theFlagellants (Medieval Italy, p. 509). Of these the mostinteresting case was that of the so-called Doves (Colomhe),or Brethren of the Dove —penitents who, following a standardof a dove and bearing olive branches in their hands, were ledfrom city to city by Venturino, a Dominican friar of Ber-gamo.
