Summary[edit]

Description

The Irvine Lake Airstrip was one of 2 airstrips constructed by the Ministry of Natural Resources used for the control of the gypsy moth infestation in the late 1970s, early 1980s. The airstrip is on the east side of Highway 41 about 8 km north of Mazinaw Lake. This asphalt runway is about 1 km in length. The runway was in good enough condition to be used for occasional landings as late as 2004 by twin engine aircraft. Brush and saplings have no grown through and encroached upon the pavement. Today the airstrip is used by 'dark sky observers' for stargazing and astronomy since there is no hydro available or home close to this remote location.

A similar runway can be found west of Skootamatta Lake on the way to Gunter via the Hughes Landing Road.
