| Description |
English: Iron Railing stumps. Sadly, an all-too familiar sight in Victorian Edinburgh - the vestiges of decorative railings removed by the municipal authorities during the Second World War, ostensibly for recycling into war materials. Whether they were in fact used is anyone's guess. Was it, like Lord Beaverbrooke's appeal for "pots and pans for Spitfires", merely a morale-boosting propaganda ploy? The damage done can be gauged by comparing this photograph with iron railings still in situ at nearby Warrender.
