ct that the mortalityfrom tuberculosis generally among persons of all ageshas considerably diminished. And as the Registrar-General points out, during these late years, while anincreasing number of infants and children have beendving, English mothers have been in greater numbersignoring their duties to their offspring, and feeding theirbabies on cows milk, to secure greater freedom to workin factories or to devote themselves to the pleasures ofthe park, the theatre, or the drawing-room. In a word,more cows milk being used—more babies and youngchildren dying of consumption. A more direct proof of the infectiousness of cowsmilk derived from a tuberculous cow is afforded by thefact that certain animals (pigs, &c.) fed continuously onsuch milk soon succumb to consumption. Veterinarystatisticians inform us that about 15 per cent of oxenand cows in these countries are tuberculous. A verymuch higher percentage of dairy-fed cows are tuber-culous. AGAINST TUBERCULOSIS 45 cats, dogs, sheep, goats, and asses but rarely contracttuberculosis. The practical questions here arise—Howcan I feel secure that my milk is safe to drink, and howcan I find out if my cow is tuberculous? My answer tothe first question is, boil the milk and boil it immediatelyit is delivered to you. Boiling kills all the germs inmilk. With respect to the second question, here againI am glad I can give definite advice. Procure theservices of a skilled veterinary surgeon, and ask him toapply the tuberculin test to your cow. This consists ininjecting a fluid called tuberculin through a syringe intothe cow. If the cow be tuberculous it will give what iscalled a reaction within twenty-four hours—that is,its temperature will become considerably raised at thesame time that the cow becomes generally sick.
