Buzzards Boost Gap, and two days after-wards Schofield moved down directly from the north close to Dalton.Heavy demonstrations were made by Hooker and Howard, and a consider-able engagement took place, but meanwhile McPhcrson moved with theFifteenth and Sixteenth Corps by Ships Gap, Villanow, and Snake Gap,toward Etesaca, some fifteen miles south of Dalton. Unable to reach therailway withoul exposing his flank to attack, he fell back to the mountain,and took up ;i strong position al Snake Gap. Leaving Howards Fourth Corps to amuse the enemy in front of Buz-sards Roost, General Sherman sent Hookers Twentieth, and PalmersI th Corps, to Snake Gap, :nid ordered Schofield to follow. The whole army, except Howards Corps, debouched from the pass into themore level country on the 12th, and moved in battle array on l!e.-aea. Hoods Corps formed the rebel right wing,Folks the left, and Hardees the centre. McPherson held the Unionright, Thomas the centre, Schofield the left. Heavy skirmishing began onthe morning of the 14th, and continued throughout the day, varied attimes with attempts to break the enemys lines. The heaviest fighting ofthe day was on the left centre, where the gallant Palmer, with his Four-teenth Corps, made a desperate attempt to force the enemy from his strongposition. About the same time a division of Schofields Corps made anattack further to the left, and assisted by Newton, and finally by Cox, suc-ceeded in getting the better of the enemy, driving him from his outer lineof works.
