On awaking the second morning we found our-selves going through a green and swampy countrywith a jungle* not far from either side of roadway,in character better to correspond to the conception 1 had framed of an Indian jungle than did the so-called jungles in Western India. When we arrivedin the station in Howrah, the terminal of the cityof Calcutta, only about twenty minutes late, wefound our host, Dr. Hector, still waiting for us;and we were forthwith conveyed to his residence, No. 2 Cornwallis Square.
