Summary[edit]

Description
English: As seen in September 2021, the New York State Department of Transportation's Allegany River Rest Area serves westbound travellers on Interstate 86 at a location between exits 24 and 23 in the Town of Allegany, New York. Opened in 2005, it sports an FHA "Excellence in Highway Design" award-winning design by the Albany-based architectural firm of Dembling & Dembling, which they describe as "a contemporary interpretation of traditional Native American Indian Longhouse vernacular", with decorative elements reflective of Seneca tribal symbology that were designed in conjunction with artist Carson Waterman. Seen here is a colorful multi-paneled art-glass window wall depicting native flora, set above racks of brochures touting regional tourist attractions and with a trio of benches in front styled to represent seating stones around a mosaic that serves as an ersatz firepit. The rest area offers washrooms, a staffed tourist information center, vending machines, drinking fountains, and a picnic area set among plantings of native flora.
