Summary[edit]

Description

International Women's Day is observed annually on 8 March. It is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. Originally conceived of as a socialist political event, the annual celebration began in 1911 and spread throughout the world. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a national holiday. For many years the United Nations has held an annual IWD conference to coordinate international efforts for women's rights and participation in social, political and economic processes. A specific theme is designated for each year’s celebrations. The UN theme for International Women's Day 2014 is "Equality for Women is Progress for All."

These posters celebrating the contribution of working women to New Zealand’s history were created by the Working Women’s Resource Centre in 1993 to commemorate the centennial of women’s suffrage. They give an overview of the issues faced by New Zealand women through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, such as the fight for franchise, the contribution to war work, and the battle for equal pay and opportunities.

These posters come from a series which provide a record of the activities of the 1993 Suffrage Centennial Year Trust and some of the projects that they funded. The Suffrage Centennial Year Trust was established in 1991 to promote the centennial and allocate funding to projects which promoted women's social, political, economic and cultural development, and increased awareness of women's contribution to New Zealand. The trust was administered by the Ministry of Women's Affairs which is a policy advice agency, undertaking Ministry-led initiatives in addition to providing gender specific advice to other government agencies, to promote women's equality.
