Description

Hagia Sophia. In eerste instantie een katholieke kerk (het huidige gebouw dateert van 532 n.Chr.), later een moskee (1453, de 4 minaretten zijn door sultan Mehmet II bijgeplaatst) en sinds 1934 op bevel van Atatürk een museum.

Achterin is de Mihrab zichtbaar, een nis in de moskee die de richting naar Mekka aangeeft. Deze mihrab dateert van de 19e eeuw.

Je kunt goed zien dat de kerk (de kathedraal van Constantinopel) door de sultan c.s. geheel is leeggehaald. Feitelijk is er een moskee overgebleven en dat zijn lege ruimtes. De 'preekstoel' rechts is ook door de sultan gebouwd, evenzo de ruimte (rechtsvoor) voor de ouderen, die daar zittend het gebed kunnen bijwonen.
