Summary

[edit]
Description

When Captain William Symonds arrived at Waikato Heads, he found that a number of rangatira had already signed Maunsell's Waikato sheet. So on 8 April 1840, Symonds sent his own copy, the Manukau-Kāwhia sheet, to Wesleyan missionaries James Wallis and John Whiteley.

This is a copy of the instructions Symonds sent with the sheet. In it he requests Whiteley to secure the signatures of further rangatira in Kāwhia and the area southward (including those of Ngāti Maniapoto). He also notes that blankets will be forwarded to him, but that it must be made clear that these gifts were not bribes or payments for their signatures.
