English: Copy of en:File:Insectivorous Plants Drew's copy.jpg with a overlaid 8×8 grid. Image demonstrates that when a 8×8 block, with pixel co-ordinate rows=8m+1:8m+8, columns=8n+1:8n+8, contains no text at all, JPEG compression produces a "clean" looking monochromatic block. However blocks containing even a pixel of text show the usual JPEG compression artifacts. This reflects the fact that JPEG can compress DC images (or DC blocks in images) without any visible artifacts even at a high compression ratio. |
