Summary[edit]
DescriptionInscriptions on the memorial to the 29th Division - geograph.org.uk - 1432601.jpg |
English: Inscriptions on the memorial to the 29th Division. The convoluted dedication commemorates the review of the Division by King George V before its departure for Gallipoli in March 1915. It makes no mention of the 250,000 Allied troops who died in the space of nine months in the disastrous Gallipoli campaign, before the evacuation completed in January 1916. Memories were still fresh; anger and resentment had not subsided. From reports of the time it is clear that people understood that this was a memorial to those who died so pointlessly. 37611 1432543 The Turkish losses were even greater: 251,000 men killed at Gallipoli. |
