9 inches from the face of this wall is the property of C.P.Christie & Co 1898. This was a brewing firm - Christie & Co Ltd, of the Hoddesdon Brewery., known as C.P. Christie & Co from 1860-1898. Limited company formed in 1903, acquired by Cannon Brewery Ltd of Clerkenwell, London in 1927 and closed down. Cannon was in turn taken over by Taylor Walker of Limehouse, and then Ind Coope. Christies at their peak owned 163 licensed houses . Information here CHARLES PETER CHRISTIE. born c 1829 in Hoddesdon, educated at Eton. Lived in High Street, married Isobel Constance Perkins in 1854. Died 1898. In the 1881 census, an interesting visitor to his house was Marta M. Kaupisch, a professor of Music from Stralsund, Pomerania, later in the DDR, now in Mecklenburg Vorpommern, Germany. A fuller history of the brewing business is found in this CAMRA newsletter which implies that the electrical engineering business of Christie in Chelmsford was related. In 1901 the brewers were Charles L and John A Christie, with another sister Isabel living in the town unmarried. Apparently , the Galley Hall (former) PH in Hailey Lane Hertford bears the name of this long vanished Brewery. |
