| Description |
English: U.S. two cents indicium depicting George Washington. Type II overprint of 2 centavos for use in occupied Cuba, 1899. The overprints were an expedient way to quickly produce envelopes for Cuba after the invasion and they were provisional in nature. They were sold for about 6 months until regular Columbus issues could be printed and distributed. This particular type of overprint was placed on two cent blue, amber and oriental buff U.S. envelopes by the Plimpton and Morgan Company in Hartford, Connecticut. It was printed on both red 2¢ Washington envelopes of 1899 (illustrated; Die 100) and the green 2¢ Washington envelopes of 1894 (Die 88). |
