general sawmillindustry, also manufacturing hard woodand a special line of poultry coops. Mr. Zion was born in Rush County, In-diana, on a farm, January 31, 1859, sonof John Quincy and Maria (Pickering)Zion. He is of Scotch-Irish ancestry. Asa boy he attended country schools and alsoSpiceland Academy. Up to the age oftwenty-seven he lived on his grandfathersfarm of 110 acres. He then went to Carth-age, and there had his first experience inthe sawmill industry, working for twoyears. Moving to Knightstown, he was forsix years clerk in a hardware house andwas a butcher one year. On returning toCarthage Mr. Zion bought a sawmill, andfor four years operated it successfully un-der his individual name. He then boughta mill in Knightstown and conducted it asa partnership under the name Zion andApplegate four years. He then bought outhis partner and conducted it alone for twoyears. The following year Mr. Zion spentin the gas business. At that time he be-came associated with Mr. H. G. Woodard,

INDIANA AND INDTANANS 1657 buying the sawmill of J. T. Barnes, whichthey conducted under the name Zion &Woodard from 1903 to 1911. At that dateMr. Zion sold out to his partner. He wasappointed postmaster of Knightstown un-der President Taft, and filled that office tothe eminent satisfaction of all concernedfour years. On leaving the postoffice Mr.Zion rejoined Mr. Woodard under the newfirm of Woodard & Zion, and they built amill and plant at their present locationand they sell the output of this plant tomany of the large centers in Indiana andOhio, and have built up a specially largetrade in poultry coops. Mr. Zion also hasa fire insurance agency for the AmericanCompany of New Jersey. He first married October 20, 1883, MissMary Kitley, daughter of John Kitley ofMarion County. Mrs. Zion was the motherof one child, Herbert, who died when threemonths old, and she died September 15,1885.
