. INDIAN WARS (1862-1877). 453 failed to support Ouster, and he, with only live companies, was compelled,single-handed, to sustain the encounter with the entire Indian force. Hisorders were, not to let the Indians escape, and in obedience to these hefliing himself upon them in full confidence that, with the co-operation ofthe other detachments of his force, he should inflict a severe punishmentupon them. Moving rapidly down the river to the ford, Ouster was met by theSioux about six hundred yards east of the river. They were surprised andin confusion, but seeing the small force in front of them, surrounded andattacked it, with confidence in their overwhelming numbers. Hundreds ofIndians on foot and on ponies poured over the river, and filled the ravineon each side of Ousters men.
