PONTIACS ATTACK ox TIIK mur. within the fort were set on fire by their blazing arrows, but the flameswere soon extinguished. Day after day they continued their attacks. Nman of the beleaguered garrison lay down to sleep except in his clothesand with his weapons by his side. The two vessels in the river helpedthe defence, protecting by their fire the northern and southern faces ofthe works. The smaller one was despatched to Niagara for aid. Pontiacwas determined to capture the fort, and omitted no means in his power toaccomplish his purpose. Under the pretence of pacific negotiations he decoyed Captain Camp-bell into his camp. This ofiicer, who had formerly commanded the fort,was favorably known to the Indians. Unfortunately for him, in a sortiefrom the fort, an Ottawa of distinction had been killed.
