Their journey took them through Wyoming.Although they did not commit any depredations, still, their presencestruck terror into the settlers, who, fearing attacks and outrages, calledupon the Government to have them returned to the reservation. Onlya few, however, could be persuaded to return to Utah, and the rest of theband continued on their roaming expedition. Soon, complaints poured infrom the settlers that the Indians were driving off cattle from the Wyomingranches. The local authorities were in doubt as to their legal right to inter-fere with these Indians, who had been enfranchised when the lands had beenallotted to them in severalty in 1879. The Indians themselves, however,had no feeling of the responsibility of citizenship; indeed, they had no dis-position to live the life of the white man.
