BLASTING STUMPS ¥T IS usually necessary in blasting stumps to place the charge as* close as possible to the toughest part of the stump, so that thepart most difficult to break will be hit first and hardest. Gen-erally this spot will be directly under the middle of the stump, andit is sometimes necessary to bore into the tap root. When a verybig stump is rotten at the middle, but has several large branchingroots, better results will be had if the charge is increased a littleand located deeper in the ground, or if under each of the large rootsa small charge is placed, and all of the charges fired simultaneouslywith a blasting machine.
