Title
Incomplete copper alloy oval buckle frame with a separate hinged plate. Medieval, fourteenth century date (AD 1350 – AD 1400).
Description
English: Incomplete copper alloy oval buckle frame with a separate hinged plate. Medieval, fourteenth century date (AD 1350 – AD 1400). Length 65mm, maximum width of buckle frame 20.5mm, maximum thickness of buckle frame 3mm. Weight 7.06g.

The frame is 23mm in length, 20mm in width and 3mm thick. The outside edge of the frame is ornate and has four shallow grooves which are flanked on either side by an elongated and prominent knop at the corner. The sides of the frame are narrowed and one is very thin. The bar is narrowed and off-set and is circular in cross-section, about 2.2mm in diameter. Linear marks on the frame appear to be file marks.
The rectangular copper alloy sheet plate, which is hinged around the bar, is 43mm in length and 14mm in width. The plate is recessed for the frame and has a circular hole to accommodate the pin, which is missing. The hole is about 2.5mm in diameter. At each corner of the plate is a rivet hole, each of which is about 1.5mm in diameter. Copper alloy rivets remain in situ at the hinged end. One of the rivets is incomplete and the other rivet is complete. This complete rivet, with a dome-head, is possibly a later repair as it is unnecessarily long and is crudely bent over at the back rather than having been burred over or hammered flush. A small part of the back plate at the attachment end is broken and missing. The break is old.
The front plate is decorated with a barely visible thin engraved or punched line which is only apparent as a border along the two longer sides.
The frame has a dark green patina and is also encrusted in places with a superficial deposit of a pale green/grey substance. The front and back plates are corroded and have a patchy mid-green patina.
